Steward Training Held
On September 15th, 2005, 25 stewards came together to participate in a
basic steward training program with Local 1116. Tony DeAngelis,
instructor with the University Of Minnesota Labor Education Service,
conducted the class. The stewards were from various industries that
Local 1116 represents. Included were healthcare members, manufacturing
members, and clerical members. They came from many areas including
Park Rapids and the Iron Range.

The class taught the stewards, (some as new as only elected 2 weeks ago)
about the roles of the steward, the rights of stewards, and the
obligations of being a steward. They were also taught about Weingarten
rights of members and the role a steward plays in disciplinary
investigations. The groups did some role playing to experience both
the management and union side of investigations.

The participants indicated that the program was informative and
interesting. Future programs for this group of stewards will involve
grievance handling from start to finish.
