Lane Harstad officially began work as a Mediator for Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services on May 1st.  In doing so, he has resigned his position as the President of the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 1116.

In the interim Joyce Berglund, Secretary-Treasurer and Union Representative has assumed Harstad's duties.  By Union By-Laws and UFCW Constitution, Berglund will remain as acting President of the Local for a minimum of 30 days but no longer than 90 days.  After 30 days has elapsed, a meeting of the Union Executive Board will be held and the Union Executive Board will select a new President to serve out Mr. Harstads term (to December 31, 2007). 

UFCW Local 1116 thanks Lane for his many years of service as a grocery clerk, Union Representative, and President of Local 1116.  His leadership leaves the local union in good shape financially and with solid contracts in place.  Because of this the transition to new leadership will be very smooth.
